Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is performed as a a part of an IVF cycle. ICSI is when an embryologist injects a single sperm directly into the center (cytoplasm) of the egg. The embryos are closely monitored over the next few days in the embryology lab to ensure there is appropriate fertilization. Once there an embryo has reached maturity, it is ready to be transferred back into the uterus.
ICSI is performed based on medical indication and helps to ensure successful fertilization. ICSI is usually recommended when sperm has a problem with mobility, low sperm count or abnormal shape which may prevent traditional fertilization.
